Angels & Demons

Filming is currently underway in Rome for the film adaptation of “Angels & Demons” – the prequel to the book-turned-blockbuster movie “The Da Vinci Code“.

The novel (and subsequent movie) is centered on the Vatican however, producers of the movie are experiencing a bit of resistance after their requests for permission to film scenes inside the churches of Santa Maria del Popolo and Santa Maria della Vittoria were denied due to the controversial material in both the film and novel.

But, in true Hollywood fashion, the show must go on – and it will. The producers of the film will be using the Bourbon Palace in Caserta, Italia as the backdrop for scenes that were originally set to shoot in the Vatican. The palace was built in the mid 18th century and has been used as a “stand-in” in the past for the Vatican in the making of Mission: Impossible III. The producers will be allowed to take exterior shots of the historic landmarks of Rome for inclusion in the film but do you think they can pull off the movie without the interior shots? The movie is scheduled to hit the big screen in May 2009…so we will just have to wait and see.

Have you read/seen The Da Vinci Code? What are your thoughts and expectations for Angels & Demons?

nyc/caribbean ragazza – I know…I would have been really shocked if they allowed filming in the churches. I think the only filming allowed in churches is documentary or educational and I think even then it would be pretty strict. I enjoyed the novel “The Da Vinci Code” more than the movie. I hope they do a better job with “Angels & Demons”

My Mélange – I’m more than half way through “Angels & Demons” and its really good. I have the illustrated hard cover book which is neat. I can see images of what they are talking about as I read. It would definitely be neat to visit Rome and see some of the sights they mention in the book. I’ve read they have A&D tours in Rome…and I’m sure more will pop after the movie is released.

    I read about this happening.

I read both books and I am looking forward to seeing the movie.

I remember reading Angels & Demons not long after I returned back from a trip to Rome.

I could have kicked myself. If I had read the book before… I would have had some fun trying to see some of the spots mentioned and would have looked at others (like the Vatican and Castle St. Angelo) with a different set of eyes.

The production built the interior of the Vatican on a sound stage in Hollywood.

I don’t know why on earth they thought they would be able to film inside those churches. I’m not Catholic but I would have said no as well.

I read the book. I hope this movie is better than the Da Vinci Code.
