5^ Sagra Della Castagna – Carpanzano (CS)

It’s that time of year again, the castagne are in abundance and Carpanzano is holding its annual Sagra della Castagna this weekend.

Sagra Della Castagna Carpanzano

In its 5th year, the festival will include a food market, games, music and of course lots and lots of castagne.

What’s your favorite way to enjoy castagne?

love, love love castagne… wish we had more of them here but they were mostly wiped out by a blight. My father planted one in his backyard years ago and it’s looking great. I like mine roasted with a glass of red near the fireplace!:)

Glad to see you back posting more often! Thanks for the picture, I have never seen what chestnuts look like on a bush, and how they grow! Very cool. I am jealous of the fact you’ve had italian chestnuts. We make do with our store bought ones that we oven roast at Christmas eve. It’s just not a holiday without them.

I had a bit of a tutorial when I was in Italy, it was really cool to see how they look before they fall to the ground and open up to give us the chestnuts we see in the stores/markets. I have had to settle for store bought chestnuts as well, and it’s utterly depressing especially when you know what you are missing! haha! You are right, it’s not a holiday without chestnuts and I guess store bought is better than nothing at all! 🙂

Ciao! This looks like fun. I just went to the Sagra della Castagna in Scala (small town on the Amalfi Coast near Ravello) last weekend. It was a blast! Especially the donkey race around the piazza. I had this wonderful pasta with chestnuts that I now want to recreate. But my favorite has to be simply roasted with a nice glass of red wine!

I love that the simplest things are usually the most memorable and favorited. I miss the Sagra/Festa life in Italy…it just isn’t found here! I can’t wait to get to Italy and get completely drunk on sagra, festas, etc.

Caldarrosto in the fireplace! But my grandmother had chestnut trees on her property in Calabria and would prepare castagnaccio, flour for bread, dry them etc. etc.

Caldarrosto on an open flame is by far my favorite way to eat chestnuts! 🙂 I “try” to recreate that here, but the chestnuts in the grocery store just can’t cut it compared to the ones in Calabria! 😛
