World Nutella Day 2018 ~ Nutella Swirled Peanut Butter Blondies

World Nutella Day has finally arrived! January felt like the longest month ever, but here we are together once again for another day dedicated to Nutella!

I am a big fan of Nutella. When we were younger it was always a special treat that our mom would cleverly (and sometimes not so cleverly) hide from us because she knew that if we managed to get our hands on it, we’d demolish it quicker than you can say “What happened to the Nutella?”.

This year marks the 12th edition of Nutella Day which started out as a humble event to share an appreciation for this delicious treat and has since grown into an internationally recognized event.

If you are curious to learn the backstory about World Nutella Day, then head on over here to read the whole story told by its original founder.

It’s quite fun seeing all the different and creative ways that people have contributed to this event.  What was once a simple chocolate hazelnut spread smeared on fette biscottate or sliced bread, has evolved into so many interesting recipes for Nutella lovers to enjoy. Just type “Nutella” into Pinterest and you will have endless ideas on how to use Nutella.

Here’s a look at some Nutella inspired recipes I’ve featured on my blog in the past:

This year, by request, I revisited recipes that used both Peanut Butter and Nutella – one of my favorite combinations!

I found this recipe and decided to give it a try!  I will probably use this recipe again and maybe tweak it a bit in the future, but overall it was a good recipe and the results were enjoyed by all!

World Nutella Day

Here’s what you need:

½ cup (115 grams)  butter, softened
½ cup (133 grams) peanut butter
1 cup (200 grams) brown sugar
2 medium eggs
1 tsp. (4 ml) vanilla
1 cup  (120 grams) flour
Nutella (as much as you like!)

Here’s what you do:

Mix the butter, peanut butter, and brown sugar until it creates a creamy mixture.

Add the eggs and vanilla to your mixture and mix well.

Add the flour bit by bit until it’s well combined.

Using a lined square pan, typical of what you might use to make brownies, pour the mixture evenly.

Make sure your Nutella is creamy or you may have some difficulty making the swirls.  Drop small spoonfuls of Nutella on the poured mixture. Using a knife or toothpick swirl the Nutella into the dough.

I kept my swirls on the surface, but in the future, I want to try and swirl the Nutella so that it gets incorporated into the middle of the blondies as well.

Bake at 175C (or 350F) for about 20-25 minutes. Let them cool before cutting them into squares.

As tempting as it is to eat them straight out of the oven, I find they are even better the next day making them great to whip up when you are expecting guests or want some homemade snacks for your loved ones.

Have you got a Nutella Day recipe?  Please, share it below!

I love Nutella and this recipe looks great. I usually just put it on toast or dip cookies in it, but I will have to give this a try. Thanks for sharing!

That’s the great thing about Nutella, you can just have it as is, I’ve been guilty of dipping a spoon in the jar – leaving the toast and cookies aside! 😛 Thanks for the comment! 🙂

Wow! I had no idea World Nutella day was an actual thing! I am more of the traditionalist Nutella and peanut butter kind of guy.

Thanks for the comment, ya it’s an actual thing, this year is the 13th edition of Nutella Day! 🙂 I totally agree, Nutella and Peanut Butter is the ultimate duo!! But, it is fun to play around and see what else you can mix Nutella into! 🙂

I wish I liked it, but I don’t like nuts. Nutella is so ubiquitous in Italy that I have to ask every time I’m offered a cornetto filled with chocolate. So often, they’ll just say, “cioccolato” and it turns out to be Nutella. Then there’s the treat of the pizza with Nutella that someone will order up for the whole table. Not that I need to eat sweets, but everyone’s happily munching on it and I’m thinking–Why couldn’t you have just left a little corner plain and I could have thrown on a little powdered sugar? But I don’t want to bring you down – enjoy your day!!

For me, I’m usually asking if it’s REAL Nutella or an imposter! haha

Your recipe looks delicious although I’m not a big Nutella fan – hard to believe living in Italy right? The thing I struggle with is that Nutella is made with Palm Oil these days and not the recipe of when I was a child (many decades ago).
Look forward to tasting your cookies. 🙂

I don’t know many people who don’t like Nutella! I don’t eat it as often as I used to, I guess the fact that I can buy it and have it whenever I want now! 🙂 Although I do like to experiment and try something new when Nutella Day comes around!
