Amantea, Cosenza, Calabria
History, natural beauty, and breathtaking coastlines surround you when you travel in Calabria. Most people don’t think about Amantea when they are planning a trip to Italy. That means it is one of Italy’s best-kept secrets. This Southern region in Italy, virtually untouched by tourists, is bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west and the Ionian Sea to the east. It boasts some of the most beautiful (and often underrated) coastlines, mountain regions, and ancient hilltop towns in all of Italy.
During my recent visit to Calabria, I was fortunate to see many places. Most of the places were in and around the small town I was staying in. I only saw the tip of the proverbial iceberg while I was there but I look forward to returning to experience more of the beauty of the region in which my family is from.
Day Trip to Amantea
One of these charming places I visited during my recent trip to Italy was Amantea. I had actually been to Amantea during a previous visit but only saw it briefly as I was there for a wedding reception. Amantea is a coastal town on Calabria’s Tyrrhenian coast in the province of Cosenza.
Amantea is full of history, having been occupied by various civilizations whose remnants can be seen sprinkled throughout town. Today Amantea is a bit of a dual personality both historic and modern. The centro storico sits high up in the hills. There you will find many churches and the ruins of a Byzantine castle built in 839. Below the old town lies the “new” city with plenty of restaurants, hotels, shops, and piazzas. It is continuing to develop into a popular vacation spot for many Italians.

November 6, 2008 at 3:03 pmAmantea is beautiful! We went there and walked all the way up to the run down castle at the top of the medieval village. There are so many amazing places in Calabria. Did you go to Fiumefreddo? If not you must go next time you are in Calabria. It’s not so far from Amantea.
No, I have never been to Fiumefreddo but it’s now on my list of places to check out when I’m back in Calabria. Amantea is definitely a beautiful town…..we walked around the centro storico and then along the coastline. We didn’t have time to explore the ruins but I do want to go back and see them.
