World Nutella Day 2019 ~ Bocconotti Calabresi with Nutella
World Nutella Day is here!
And as I indulge in some Nutella today, I think to myself, che mondo sarebbe senza Nutella? (what would the world be like without Nutella?)
And World Nutella Day couldn’t come at a better time. As the winter starts feeling long and drawn out and our hopes of Spring seem far away still, it’s nice to have a day to appreciate something that isn’t only yummy but brings together people from all over the world sharing delicious recipes.
This year we are celebrating the 13th edition of World Nutella Day which started out as a fun idea to share an appreciation for this delicious treat but has since grown into an internationally recognized event.
If you are curious to learn the backstory about World Nutella Day, then head on over here to read the whole story told by its original founder.
I’ve been steadily participating in World Nutella Day since I started this blog and it’s always fun to think up new ways to incorporate Nutella into different recipes.
Here’s a look at some Nutella inspired recipes I’ve featured on my blog in the past:
There are so many great ideas out there, it’s hard to come up with something new. This year, I decided to share a traditional Calabrian dessert that is typically made with jam but you’ll also find it made with Nutella – I Bocconotti!
I’ve always enjoyed eating this traditional treat and decided what better time to try making them myself than for World Nutella Day. I have to say, my first attempt wasn’t too bad and the Bocconotti were pretty much devoured! So, I guess that’s a good sign!
So, if you are interested in making Bocconotti Calabresi with Nutella Filling, here is the recipe I used!
Here’s what you need:
Ingredients:
500 grams flour type 00
200 grams sugar
150 grams unsalted butter
3 eggs
1 envelope of baking powder
1 envelope of vanillina
Nutella (for the filling – you can also use marmalade)
powdered sugar (to sprinkle on top)
You’ll also need aluminum cupcake molds.
Here’s what you do:
Sift the flour over a pastry board or any clean surface that will allow you to work with the dough once its combined.
Create a “volcano” with the flour forming a hole in the center.
Add the ingredients one at a time – start with baking powder, then vanillina, and the eggs. Give the eggs a bit of a mix with a fork.
Now add the sugar and butter and begin combining all the ingredients.
Don’t worry if it seems like its a bit dry, have patience and keep kneading the dough, it will get to a point where it will become a smooth dough.
Once you’ve got your dough ready, take half of it and, using a rolling pin, roll it out to a thickness of about 1/2 cm.
Cut out squares of the dough and place them into the aluminum molds, which have been previously greased and floured (so that you can remove the bocconotti from the mold easily when they are done). You can remove any excess dough around the edges.
Now it’s time to fill the bocconotti. Using a teaspoon, scoop a couple of teaspoons of your filling of choice (in our case Nutella) to fill the molds.
Take another piece of the dough and lie it on top to cover the mold. Gently press down around the border so that the bottom and top pieces of the dough adhere. Once again, you can remove any excess dough.
Once you have completed all the molds, place them on a baking sheet. Bake at 350F (180C) for about 20 minutes.
Let the bocconotti cool before you remove them from the molds. Place them on a serving dish and sprinkle them with powdered sugar.
And that’s it! Now you can share them with your loved ones!
Be sure to let me know if you try this recipe or if you have a recipe you’d like to share with us!

February 6, 2019 at 6:09 amMy favorite way to have Nutella is to leave it for others. I don’t like nuts and since Nutella is quasi synonymous with chocolate, I always have to ask when someone says chocolate if it’s really chocolate… But your bocconotti pastry looks great, so you can fill them with marmalade for me.

February 6, 2019 at 10:44 amYou are one of the few people I know that isn’t a fan of Nutella! We can definitely do marmalade – do you have a preference? I actually did some of these bocconotti with “frutti di bosco” marmalade.

February 7, 2019 at 7:50 amFrutti di bosco would be great! And I think a citron or bergamot marmalade in Calabria would be great to try, too.
