World Nutella Day 2020 ~ Nutella Rum Balls
World Nutella Day is celebrating 14 years and it still continues to amaze me how a simple and fun idea turned into such a big deal!
As a company, the makers of Nutella are always trying to find new and entertaining ways to make us fall in love with it all over again – not like that’s hard!
Lately in Italy, Nutella has been doing some fun things with their jars. At the beginning of last year, the jars were covered with inspirational sayings like this one:
Then, at the end of last year, there was a campaign called “Nutella Gemella“. It was sheer genius, in my opinion! They released Nutella jars with various designs, all of which were really similar.
Every design had “una gemella” or a twin. On the back label, there was a code that you could register on their website and if another person registered the same code, your gemella was found!
We picked up a couple of jars (aren’t they cute?!?) however we haven’t found our twin yet! Who knows if down the road it turns up. We are keeping our eyes on the Instagram hashtags that were created out of this campaign.
Now, back to the task at hand. I’ve been sharing recipes for World Nutella Day almost every year. I have to admit, it’s getting harder to come up with ideas!
This year, I’ve decided to experiment again and make rum balls with Nutella! So, if you are reading this post, that means this year’s experiment worked! Whew!
So, if you are interested in making Nutella Rum Balls, I’ve got the recipe for you!
Here’s what you need:
Ingredients: (makes approximately 30-40 balls)
1 1/2 cups Nutella
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups vanilla wafers, finely crushed
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1/4 cup rum (or as preferred)
Coatings I used:
chopped pistachio
chopped hazelnuts
shredded coconut
Here’s what you do:
In a bowl, blend together the Nutella, butter, and salt. Then, add the finely crushed vanilla wafers, cocoa powder and half of the desired rum.
Once mixed together, let the mixture sit for about half an hour to an hour. This will give the wafers time to absorb the rum. Add the rest of the rum a bit at a time. You want to make sure that the consistency of the mixture isn’t too dry or too wet. You should be able to roll the mixture into small balls without it crumbling apart.
Next, roll the mixture into small balls and then roll them around in the coating you have chosen. I placed my rum balls in small cupcake liners so that they are easier to serve.
And that’s it! Now you can share them with your loved ones!
Let me know if you try this recipe, and check out some other Nutella inspired recipes I’ve featured on my blog for World Nutella Day in the past:
I don’t know about you, but I’ve grown up with Nutella. It’s been very much a part of my childhood, and let’s be honest, it continues to be a part of my adult life, too!
What’s your favourite memory that includes Nutella? I’d love to hear it, so leave me a comment below!

February 13, 2020 at 8:39 amYou could probably substitute with another type of liqueur, for example, Amaretto.

And as for the jars, well I may be (unintentionally) starting a collection of Nutella jars! I just can’t bring myself to put them out in the recycling! haha!

February 10, 2020 at 2:17 amSounds delicious but need to substitute real chocolate for Nutella! 😉
Maybe we can make some together some time.

February 13, 2020 at 8:40 amWell, the original recipe is with real chocolate – this was a spin on it for Nutella Day! 😛 We can definitely whip up a batch together (with real chocolate of course!)

February 9, 2020 at 3:25 pmAs much as I love Nutella on a spoon (no recipe could be easier than that, could it?! :P), these rum balls look so fantastic and actually doable! I’ll give it a go, and hopefully, have some leftover for my husband!

February 9, 2020 at 8:36 pmI also love the classic, no-fail Nutella on a spoon! But, every so often it’s fun to try something new! 😛

I am going to save this recipe for the next time that my friends are holding a potluck style event… I’m sure I’d be everyone’s favourite if I show up with these in hand! (Okay, confession – I’ll be making them at home to try them out first lol)

February 8, 2020 at 9:07 amIt’s always fun to experiment with Nutella and I’ve been taking some traditional recipes and trying to see if Nutella can be used with or instead of certain ingredients. This experiment was a success – I’ve had to translate the recipe into Italian because my Italian friends want to give it a try after tasting my batch! 🙂 I hope your husband enjoys them!

February 7, 2020 at 8:01 pmPardon me but HOLY CRAP Nutella Rum balls??? This is a game-changer and let’s face it most things are better with rum. I love those Nutella containers as well. I feel like the ones in the states are so plain and boring. I would absolutely make these and use the pistachio coverings as described. That’s if I didn’t eat the whole bag of pistachios first. I am totally making these for our next party. Better keep the kids away from them.

February 8, 2020 at 9:13 amI know, right?!?!?! I wasn’t sure it would work, but it did! 🙂 Nutella marketing here in Italy is so clever, it’s a shame they don’t do similar campaigns in other parts of the world. We are having a hard time recycling these Nutella Gemella jars, we may need to find a way to display them! HAHAHA I am partial to the coconut covering, but they were all so good!
